NEW ENGLAND TO HOST NABCs in Boston!
The wonderful news for all of us in District 25 is that the much-anticipated 2008 Fall NABC will take place right in our own back yard at Copley Place (Westin/Marriott) in BOSTON beginning November 20, 2008. Thousands of players from all over the country -and the world- will be traveling to this great city for eleven exciting days of bridge -- and so much more!
It promises to be a nonstop whirlwind of special events for players in all categories, with lectures and appearances by world-renowned celebrities, great entertainment, parties, sports and theatre tours and, of course, our own brand of New England hospitality and the delicious foods for which we are famous.
It won't happen without a lot of planning and help -- and that is where YOU come in. We need your help if it's going to be the fantastic success we're aiming for.
- Do you have a special expertise in marketing and publicity?
- Do you have connections with the business world, the arts, sports, or tourism industries that we can tap into?
- Do you have some great ideas that, perhaps, have never been tried before.
We want to know about it -- and what will make this the most memorable NABC you've ever attended.

Logo/Slogan Contest WinnerA winner has been chosen in the competition for a logo and slogan for the North American Bridge Championships (NABC) to be held in Boston from November 20-30, 2008. Dianne Koch, a relatively new EMBA member, submitted the winning slogan—MAKE HISTORY IN BOSTON—along with her original drawing of a logo that includes a turkey, outfitted with a pilgrim hat and sporting playing cards in the place of feathers.
Koch’s entry was selected from a field of more than 75 submissions. The field was narrowed to about a dozen front runners by NABC 2008 committee co-chairs Kathy Benjamin and Frank Lombardo. The winning entry was selected by an independent group of District 25 officials. “There were a number of excellent contenders,” said Lombardo, who extends his personal thanks to everyone who took time to submit an entry. “However, the final decision was unanimous. We think it will serve as an excellent promotional tool for our tournament.”
Dianne, who has been playing duplicate for about a year, works in the operating room at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA. She is the sister of EMBA members Bob Gaudet and Bernice Dziejma, whom she credits for inspiring her to play duplicate bridge. Dianne will receive free plays for the NABC tournament for her winning submission.
A professional illustrator is adapting Dianne’s art work so that it can be used on banners, t-shirts and other promotional materials associated with the national tournament. “We hope to showcase the official logo and slogan at the regional tournament in Cromwell, CT,” says Lombardo. “We think it will make a little history all on its own.”
